Year End Summary for 2022
YEAR END SUMMARY STATION NAME: Brule River nr Hovland, MN61 STATION NUMBER: H01022001 YEAR: 2022 PREPARED BY: Jim Pogorelc (jim.pogorelc@state.mn.us CLIMATE SUMMARY: Division 3: The first four months of the year were very cold and very wet, with temperatures averaging more than 7^ F lower, and precipitation averaging more than 50% higher than the 1991-2020 normals. Parts of Cook County were exceptionally wet during this time. May remained extremely wet, but drier conditions ensuing in June left the May-September precipitation season only slightly wetter than normal, with near-normal temperatures. Several outbreaks of severe convective storms affected the area in May and June, but there were no major rainfall or flash-flooding episodes during the precipitation season. Accumulating snow during mid-November appears established the seasonal snowpack, and a major storm December 13-17 dropped 18 to 30 inches of snow, containing 1.5 to 3 inches of water equivalent. Additional snows the following week led to a near-record snowpack for the end of December, with 18-36 inches on the ground in most areas, ranking above the 99th percentile for this time of year. STATION OPERATION SUMMARY: Is this site monitored year round? NO Open water dates - estimated Ice out and Ice in: 04/19/2022 and 11/09/2022 Open water sites ONLY. Period of data record (if different from ice out/ice in dates): 04/13/2022 to 10/31/2022. Summary of equipment - related factors that impacted data collection: No equipment issues were reported however some ice impacted radar level data was used to compute discharges for periods coded as ice. DISCHARGE SUMMARY: Number of flow measurements for monitoring season: 7 Was the full range of flows measured for the season? NO. The maximum and minimum measured flows were 3840 and 39 cfs. The maximum and minimum computed flows were 3840 and 49 cfs. Discharges beyond 5/10/22 will be computed once two years of flow measurements have been collected in order to re-define the rating curve within the flow range of the altered control. Was a new rating developed? No. General summary of control changes/shifts needed: No shifts were required in the first half of 2022 before the May event that destroyed the channel. Quality of computed daily discharges: A good portion of the year was coded good followed by poor, estimated, fair and ice. PRECIPITATION DATA OVERVIEW: Was precipitation data collected at this site?
