Year End Summary for 2021
YEAR END SUMMARY STATION NAME: Snake River at Mora, MN65 STATION NUMBER: H36049001 YEAR: 2021 PREPARED BY: Steve Labuz, stephen.labuz@state.mn.us CLIMATE SUMMARY: Division 6, 2021: After a generally mild winter with normal to below-normal snowfall, warm and dry conditions dominated the May-through-October liquid precipitation season, leading to widespread Severe and Extreme drought categorizations on the US Drought Monitor. Precipitation from May through October averaged about 65% of normal. May through July was extremely dry, with an average of around 5.5 inches of rain falling over the 3-month period (normal would have been 12.5 inches). June and July had bouts of extreme heat, which worsened the drought conditions, and May through October averaged about 3 degrees F above normal and was the warmest on record. Above-normal precipitation during late summer and autumn helped drought conditions improve, although deficits remained. No significant precipitation events occurred. Mean temperatures fell below freezing in early November, with accumulating snows most areas in early December. STATION OPERATION SUMMARY: Is this site monitored year round? NO Open water dates - estimated Ice out and Ice in: Ice out on 3/15/2021, ice in is unknown because monitoring equipment was removed on 11/3/2021 while the river was ice free. Open water sites ONLY. Period of data record (if different from ice out/ice in dates): 3/12/2021 to 11/3/2021 Summary of equipment - related factors that impacted data collection: Bubbler line causing static data was a problem from 3/12/2021 until 6/3/2021 when maintenance was preformed. Rain bucket collection was also a problem until 6/23/2021. DISCHARGE SUMMARY: Number of flow measurements for monitoring season: 6 Was the full range of flows measured for the season? NO - Spring high flows were missed but low flows were captured early and mid summer. The highest and lowest measured flow was 931 cfs and 35.7 cfs while the highest and lowest calculated flows were 1700 cfs and 33 cfs. Was a new rating developed? NO General summary of control changes/shifts needed: A low flow depostion shift was installed all year due to flaw in rating and a scour shift was assumed to be isolated to one event in September. Quality of computed daily discharges: Flows qualities were mostly poor but also included fair, estimated, and ice. PRECIPITATION DATA OVERVIEW: Was precipitation data collected at this site? YES Climatological liquid precipitation period: 5/1/2021 to 10/31/2021 Was there a complete and acceptable precipitation record for this period? NO - Data was deleted from 5/1/2021 until 6/23/2021 because the logger did not record rain bucket tips until logger was swapped.
