Lineage

Underground mining areas were compiled from a number of sources.  Areas with documented underground mine workings were digitized on screen using a compilation of a variety of historical maps, cross sections, images and tabular documentation.  Other references included USX plate images of the Mesabi Range, GNIOP Mesabi Range Maps, and an assortment of historical mining maps (1200 scale to 24000) stored at various agencies and companies including:  Iron Range Research Center (Iron World), DNR Lands and Minerals Office, Department of Revenue, RGGS, Meriden Engineering, Great Northern Iron Ore Properties, Eveleth Fee, Hibbing Taconite and USS Mintac and Keetac.  Arcs and polygons were digitized from a geo-referenced image of a compilation of the above documentation.  Compiled information was geo-referenced to survey PLS corners where available with at least 4 control points digitized at a minimum of 1:2000.  Where survey control points were not available, scans were geo-referenced to other scans that were larger in scale and geo-referenced to survey points.  Undocumented underground features were not mapped and are not included in this dataset.
